OVERVIEW
While attending Smart Craft Studio we learned how to integrate traditional Japanese woodworking techniques with smart and human-centered technology. The topic for the Smart Craft Studio 2017 is "Animating Craft" - to create meaningful interactions between human and human-made objects through woodworking, sensory processing, and cognitive artificial intelligence (cognitive A.I.) in the context of art and design.

CLIENT RESEARCH
In order to decide on what client we wanted to work with our team select companies from a list off 22 to see what their individual needs were and how best we could help them with technology. We met with the local farmer, coffee shop owner and antique shop owner. 
 


PROTOTYPES
After deciding to work with the coffee shop owner we wanted to provide her with a modular table that could be used to order and moved or relocated within the shop to make room for entertainment.  We developed multiple prototypes and tested their durability. 


SOLUTION
Working collaboratively wth a team of creative technologists, architects and designers we developed a conversation interface using IBM Watson. It was designed to allow english speaking visitors to place their orders in a coffee shop and IBM Watson translated their orders into Japanese and communicated the order to the employees. This was to help foster communication between the natives and visitor's thereby improving tourism in the community.

PRODUCT
The final product is a modular table that can transform into book shelf, coffee table and table for the coffee shop owner.
